It appears some team(s) are still practicing at PSC Field #5, despite field being closed. Not sure if it's a PTSA team (but field lining probably is indication that it is, or a Cup team is up there using our equipment and supplies without permission as was observed 2 weeks ago). Please send message to all your Coaches that Field #5 is closed and under repair / maintenance. Also, if anyone sees a Cup team up there, please ask them to respect the field closure signs.

Thanks, and as everyone knows, Field #5 will never get to suitable condition if the maintenance effort is handicapped by unauthorized use.

Hello…

All of the goals on field 5 had been removed from the playing fields and the Park Maintenance staff had started their intensive maintenance on the field. In the last couple of days, some goals have made it back onto the playing surface and a field has actually been line with field paint. There are "field closed" signs on the fence indicating that the field is closed. I realize that it is possible for anyone to enter the area when it is not being monitored. But because the field has been lined with paint, we tend to believe that it was an organized group. Can you please get the word out that we really want to accomplish some intense maintenance on that field during the off season, play on that field man negate the efforts being put into the field. I am also going to contact the Police Department and ask them to keep an eye on all fields that are posted "closed" in their rounds to help with enforcement.

In an effort to minimize waste, would each of the commissioners ask that all coaches return their extra trophies to the shed at Peterswood (0771) this week. Many coaches took extra trophies in case a player who had not been showing up all season, choose to attend the last game of the season. I would prefer not to end up with 100 extras or 10 short at the end of the season.

A good question, so I'm bcc'ing the rest of the U8 coaches.

The answer is... I don't know. I'll need to check with the Fields guys to see. I know that some major work was to start at Peterswood Soccer Complex, but I'm not sure of the timeframe.

I'll see if I can dig up an answer soon. Worst case is that I'll find out at our PTSA Board Meeting on Monday night.

The answer is that you rate your players based on how they played this year, relative to all of the players in U8 this year.

See OP17 (I have a link below) for discerning between the ratings (e.g. A's are in the top %10-%20).

The Annual soccer picnic will be on May 31, 2008, at Peterswood Park Shelter #1 from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. I will need people (parents and coaches and commssioner and board members) to help out throughout the day. Set up will begin at 8 AM getting the shelter swept, tables covered, coolers filled, stuff set out and put up signs. Grilling starts at 9:30 AM. Throughout the day, help will be needed to cook hot dogs, keep coolers filled, empty garbage cans and keep supplies out. My soccer game that day is at 3 PM (at Reese). So I will need someone to take over around 2:30. I will return after my game to help clean-up. I will buy / bring all the supplies, but we will need coolers for drinks, ice and raw hot dogs.

Commissioners, please send this message to your coaches and have them send to their parents (yes, parents can help out). All volunteers should e-mail me with the time they can help.

n The use of 1 v 1 match related activities will help players perfect their skills against the opposition in more demanding situations.

100 minutes

n Participants play "street soccer" in a "pick-up" game environment

n Small sided teams are randomly assigned; play 5-10 minutes on a rotational basis

n No adult coaching, refereeing or feedback: the kids play games (supervised by PTSA coaches), where they motivate themselves, figure out how to use the learned techniques and play in a fear-free environment.

I've heard that the lines are almost gone at Venetia, so just a reminder:
The 9am coaches (regardless of where your game is played) are responsible for all U8 Boys fields, including Venetia.

This weekend it is Dave Grzyb and Kevin Hoffman (the home team coaches) that need to coordinate.

Thanks for the great comments. I always appreciate feedback from the U8 coaches. I've cc'd Pete Chiste (PTSA President) and Steve Glovier (Referee Coordinator). I've also cc'd the rest of the U8 coaches.

First, let me say that I greatly appreciate all the volunteer time you guys put into the season. I can never say this enough. It is a lot of work and I understand your issues and concerns. So, please understand that PTSA is grateful for your time.

I also know that the emails that come flying your way can become overwhelming. There are a lot of responsibilities for a coach and it can become difficult and confusing. I agree that setting the right "tone" is important, but it is often difficult in emails. Emails like Steve's can come off harsher than what I think he was suggesting.

Again, thank you for your comments. And thank you for your time and efforts.

However when I see e-mails like this and the e-mail a few weeks ago about the alleged harsh treatment that some of the refs got, I guess I feel that I need to provide our feedback.

Its hard enough time to manage all of the aspects of coaching and watching our kids, now Steve feels we have some additional obligation to coordinate travel or supervision for referees, and I understand they are kids but at what point do we as coaches stop getting these very negative comments for things we supposedly did wrong. I am sorry no one stayed to help the refs but enough is enough on this. I understand the need not to yell at them and to provide positive support and I understand Steve has his hands full but so do most us and I am doing the best I can. I have to tell you that if this is what the Peters Township coaches are going to keep hearing from you and others than I would not want to volunteer again and I definitely will not recommend coaching to other friends.

I love coaching and I want to volunteer but I will not continue to be treated like this and I do feel that others that volunteer for you feel the same way.

Referee Coordinator Feedback - I took this job last fall with the naive perspective that my responsibility was to schedule referees to work games - there are 118 referees with ~90 referee slots to fill every weekend - so I thought scheduling would be my primary effort. But as it turns out I am also a mentor to the referees, which means I had to not only become a referee, but work games, so that I could relate to the referees and actually help them. And some people think I'm also supposed to train all 118 referees so that when they step on to their 1st U-8 game they are capable of making all appropriate calls and 'running' a soccer game - that expectation is a little too high . . . .

For the U-8 and U-10 in-house games, clearly one of the problems with the referees is their lack of call making - they feel it is easier to not make a call - this is often lack of confidence. Since we can't work with 118 referees (40 brand new ones) 1-on-1, we will start to ask the new referees to make at least 1 penalty call each 30 minutes of play - 2 per game. This might mean that in the beginning they might call a 'push' when the player just slipped and grabbed someone to keep from falling . . . so please be patient . . . . if we get them making calls and blowing their whistles, please don't then jump on them for making a wrong call - this is actually a part of their learning process.

Telling young referees that they need to be more confident, or constantly telling them to blow their whistle louder, won't necessarily help them become more confident. Confidence is built over time, with positive experiences.

The referees are taught that their #1 priority is safety. Law 4 is very clear - Safety - A player must not use equipment or wear anything which is dangerous to himself (or herself) or another player (including any kind of jewelry).

All of the youth referees have been playing soccer for many years and they know they have never been allowed to where jewelry.

Since this law is clear, we have given the referees clear instructions to enforce this law. No player will be allowed to play while wearing any type of jewelry, including earrings, even if they are taped or have Band-Aids on them.

Thank you in advance for your support in helping the PTSA players adhere to the laws of the game, and hence enjoy a safer game of soccer.

Another reminder, and this is also documented in the U8 Parent Guide and the U8 Top 10 FAQ.

The referees are typically kids and are part of the learning process. Do not "make calls" for them. Please be patient and give them your respect. Always encourage them to be loud and vocal (as they are often timid).

I don't want to hear any stories of referees going home crying. Be as tactful, supportive and positive as possible. Keep in mind that some of these kids are as young as 10 years old. It's very intimidating for them.

Lining Fields

I was embarrassed to see that not all of our U8 fields got lined by 9am Saturday morning.
So, as a refresher (all of this information was already available in the Coaches Guide), I'm sending this email.

Who is responsible for lining the fields?
All 9am coaches are responsible for lining the fields. The designated "Home" coaches should take ownership of coordinating and making sure all fields get lined. Feel free to delegate field lining duties to some of your player parents if you are too busy.

What fields do we have to line?
PSC 3, 4 & 5, plus Venetia B.
Make sure they ALL get lined. Don't forget about Venetia, even if your game is not there.

When should I line the fields?
I would highly recommend you get it done on a Thursday or Friday before the Saturday games. I would recommend having one or more of your player parents do it while you coach during the week.

Where can I find the field lining equipment?
Paint machines and paint for PSC can be found in the storage shed above the fields. See the Coaches Guide for more details.
Venetia can be lined with the machine and paint from Rees Park (they are in an unlocked box behind one of the soccer fields at the top of Rees).

How do I line the fields?
See the field lining procedure is in the Coaches Guide.

As you know, PTSA is holding training sessions this month for those players who are eligible to tryout for Travel Teams in May for the 2008-09 year. We had a great turnout this past Saturday, but some of the players attending were not the correct ages, which put a strain on the instructors. To be age eligible to attend these sessions, a player interested in U10 Travel must be born between 8/1/98 – 7/31/99.

This means the child must be 9 years old by July 31^st, 2008

If a child will not be 9 years old by that cutoff, we have a great Street Soccer program in May. You will be receiving information on this to pass on to your teams, it's on the website, and also will be in the Soccer Shorts newsletter this month.

Please send this information to all of you teams, regardless of their ages, because this is important information for siblings as well. Please make parents aware that, just like at tryouts in May, we need them to be clear of the sides of the fields. For a great view, they can watch from the top of the hill near the playground. It's much less distracting for the kids if the parents are not in their line of vision.

Game Schedule Completed
I've completed the U8 Game Schedule, and I've added it to my U8 Boys website. The pink column represents the games I've decided to cancel for this coming weekend. I would really like the 9am coaches in the pink column to take responsibility for lining the fields this weekend (that is you Don & Jim). As mentioned earlier, the 9am Home Coaches are responsible for delegating/managing the lining work. We are responsible for PSC 3, 4 & 5, and Venetia B (although it would be nice to take care of Venetia G if you are there).

Field Diagrams & Numbers
Hopefully I'll get a chance to update the field diagrams - so you know where to practice and play games. In the meantime, note that we made sure to label the PSC fields with large "3", "4", and "5" numbers next to each field.

U8 Spring Soccer to begin... maybe.

Here are my latest thoughts/notes on the Spring season.

Fields still not open
Parks & Rec still has not open the fields for our use. Please stay off of them until you hear the hotline say they are open. We are trying very hard not to destroy our already poorly conditioned fields.

Fields are created and lined
With the help of some great volunteers on Saturday morning, we were able to create all 7 U8 soccer fields (it took 5 hours to get everything completed). Like in the fall, U8 Boys will be assigned PSC U8 fields 3,4 & 5 - and one U8 field (marked with a "B" for Boys) at Venetia.

Games will be delayed 1 week
Our first game will be April 12th. Last game will be May 31st (trophy and picnic day), as originally planned. That is a 7 game schedule. Optionally, I'll let you decide if you want to make up the game originally planned for this coming weekend. Just pick a practice night sometime during the season and have a friendly scrimmage.

I need a few volunteers
I will be out of town this weekend, and a badly need a couple of volunteers to re-line our U8 fields so all of our hard work does not get erased by the weather. It should only take an hour or two if I can get a handful of volunteers. I'd like the work to be done sometime on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Anyone, anyone? Bueller, Beuller?

I should have a full game schedule completed tonight or tomorrow (I keep saying that... sorry).

Need Volunteers For U8 Soccer Fields This Weekend

Here is the latest information I have on fields, practices and games. I need volunteers for this weekend. Please email me or call me (412.327.6464) if you have the time to help. It will be greatly appreciated.

Where will we play U8 soccer this Spring?
Unfortunately, we still have not heard back from Parks-N-Rec regarding the availability of the PV space. This puts me in an awkward position since we need to line fields this weekend. I've talked with Pete Chiste and other board members, and we've agreed to go ahead and put 5 U8 fields at the Peterswood Soccer Complex (PSC) and 2 U8 fields at Venetia. This is the same configuration as last fall (however, we'll rotate the fields 90 degrees at PSC).

If PV becomes available we'll address moving all U8 fields at that time (this would allow for PSC rework and rest). I'm hoping we get a response today confirming or denying PV availability. I would hate to have to create U8 fields twice. But for now, I'm assuming PV will not be available to us. I can't hold off any longer.

Will the fields be open next week?
Currently, all fields are closed. It's up to (a) Mother Nature and (b) our Director of Fields to determine availability next week. Keep in mind that it is not uncommon, in the Springtime, for us to have little-to-no-practice before our first games. It's not ideal, but what can we do? Check the hotline if you want to know if they are open or closed.

I need volunteers for this weekend
Ok, I just looked at weather.com and it looks like we will have a window of opportunity to get the U8 fields lined and set up tomorrow (Saturday). I plan on starting at 8am at PSC, and won't stop until all of the fields are complete. The more volunteers, the faster it will go. The work that needs done includes:

Measuring & Staking all of the fields (7 total fields).
Lining/painting all of the fields.
Moving goals into place.
Inspecting and repairing any netting issues.
Inspecting and placing all goal sand bags.

What will be the practice schedule?
As of today, I plan on keeping the same practice schedule as the fall. New coaches can send me their requests. If we get PV, this will need to change.

What will be the game schedule?
My policy is that I won't build a game schedule until all of the fields are lined and completed. It would be a mistake to create the game schedule not knowing what will happen with the field situation (number of fields, locations, etc). Hopefully I can get the game schedule done on Sunday.

Field Guidlines for Coaches

To help keep the fields in good shape we have instiuted a HOME team policy. The HOME team for each given game is responsible for the field they are playing on at that time. The responsiblites of the HOME team are as follows:

First game of the day the Home team coach is responsible to line that field. If you can't do it before the game then do it Friday night or arrange for the other coach to line the field. Check the nets and goals. Portable goals must have a sand bag on them. Net repair kits will be made aviliable at the fields. If you see a net that needs repaired then please repair that net.

Home field coach is responsible to ensure that the field area is clean after the game. Please clean up water bottles and other trash and remind the visting team to do the same.

Last home team coach of the day should put away the corner flags.

Coaches see the field more then anyone elso so please report issues and problems so we can document them and repair the problem.
If you have a Wensday practice and have a parent that is consintelt there then try and encourage them to line the field during practice. This will make a huge diffrence in the quality of the field lines.
These tasks can be done quickly if they are done weekly and by all the coaches. These tasks take along time if they are done once a season by two or three volunteers.

Here are my notes that I think are relevant to U8 and not already documented on my U8 Coaches Guide from the coaches meeting last night.

Out of Town
I'm going to be out of the country from this weekend to next Wednesday. It's bad timing, so bear with me. I'll try my best to pull everything together on time. I may be able to check my email while I'm gone.

New Teams
I'm still in the process of forming new teams for this Spring. Please be patient as I wait for registrations to come in, and as I try to round up volunteers for coaching.

Practices & Fields
Practices will likely begin March 24th. Please don't prematurely play on the fields, as they have not been opened yet, nor have they been allocated to PTSA. It's possible that part of the Peterswood Soccer Complex and/or Venetia will be shut down for maintenance and repairs. I'll get you information as soon as I receive it.

Games
Games start April 5th, and end May 31 (no games Memorial Day weekend). I'll send out a game schedule as soon as I complete building the new Spring teams. I'm waiting for registrations to come in.

Street Soccer
There will be Street Soccer May 3, 10, and 17. It's basically pick-up soccer for the kids - where the parents let the kids manage everything. More information to come later.

PTSA Annual Coaches Meeting
The annual PTSA Coaches Meeting and 2008-2009 Board Election will be at Bella Piatto Restaurant on June 5th. Please contact Bill Weyers if you have any interest in serving on the Board.

British Camp
The Challenger British Soccer Camp will be July 14-18. Look for more details at ptsoccer.net.

Setting Up the Fields and Nets
I'll be looking for volunteers to help set up the U8 soccer fields. Any help I can get will be appreciated. I need to wait until I hear about field allocation, and from the Fields Coordinator, before we go out and set up all of the fields. Stay tuned.

Background Clearances
Any new coaches need to get Background clearances. See the handout for the coaches meeting for more information.

Photo Day
We will have team Photos taken this Spring. Dates have not been determined.

Champions

McMurray, PA – March 2, 2008 – Soccer fans and players in Peters Township will kick off the spring soccer season at a special event at the Peters Township Public Library, reliving all the exciting action of Peters Township's victory against Downingtown West in the PIAA Class AAA boys' soccer championship. The match will be shown on the big screen in the library's main lobby, and players from the championship team will attend the program, along with their Coach Bob Dyer.

Younger soccer players age 10 and up from the Peters Township Soccer Association (PTSA,) the township's recreational soccer program, will receive a special invitation to the program through their coaches. Those attending will have an opportunity to meet the team who brought home the gold medals, get their autographs, and see the skills that brought the first championship since 1989 home to Peters Township.

We had our PTSA meeting last night and I wanted to pass my notes.

I need coaches
I need at least two or three more coaches for this spring. Please pass the word to anyone you know that might be interested. I received a lot of registrations for this Spring and I'm in a bind until I can find some more volunteers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Coaches Meeting
There will be a Coaches Meeting next Wednesday (March 12th 7pm-9pm) at the old Rec Center near the Police Station.

Field Help
I will need lots of help setting up our fields for this Spring. I would greatly appreciate anyone willing to help.

Other noteworthy items

There will be a "Y" Coaching course March 22nd. Let me know if you are interested.
The Challenger Soccer Camp will be held July 14-18 this year. More information can be found on our website.
It's possible that part of the Soccer Complex will be shut down for renovations. I'm not sure if we will get Venetia again. Stay tuned.
There will be a fund raising Golf Outing May 16th. I encourage all of you to participate. More information to follow in the next few weeks.
New coaches only need to get the eKidsSafe check (through PA West). Parks and Rec are not forcing us to get both checks moving forward.

There is a TOPSoccer event coming up on Saturday, March 22^nd. The venue will be Hempfield Township Athletic Complex. Attached is information and registration form. Please forward this to all Coaches with a request they send it to all players' families in case they know of a special needs soccer player that might enjoy participating.

For those unfamiliar with US Youth Soccer's TOPSoccer, it is a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, organized by youth soccer association volunteers. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, ages 4-19, who has a mental or physical disability. Its goal is to enable the thousands of young athletes with disabilities to become valued and successful members of the US YOUTH SOCCER family.

Please get the word out on the March 22nd event ... since we've not had a TOPSoccer program in PTSA, my guess is there are interested players in Peters Township who might not be aware of this wonderful program.

Peters Township Soccer Association (PTSA) is holding an Entry Level Referee Certification course on Friday, February 29th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday, March 1st from 9:00am to 5:00pm for new referees.

Individuals who attend this 2 day course and pass the test at the end of the course with at least a 75% will become a certified Grade 9 soccer referee.

PTSA has one of the finest groups of soccer referees. Each of these individuals have:

A greater understanding of the game of soccer
Improved confidence and leadership skills
A very high paying job

The 2008 US Youth Soccer adidas Workshop will be held in Pittsburgh on February 7-9 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and will feature the new, Kick Zone, open on Saturday, February 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m for kids of all ages.

This player area will feature the Kohl� US Youth Soccer American Cup Interactive Village complete with kick wall, soccer dribble inflatables and games. Adding to the excitement, interactive games will be provided by adidas, Kwik Goal, Fox Soccer Channel, the Columbus Crew, AC Milan and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. The exhibit hall and Kick Zone are free and open to the public on Saturday.

Two types registration is available for the convention, full registration, which provides access to all educational sessions, exhibit hall and the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala on Friday night, and a Day Pass, which provides daily access to educational sessions and the exhibit hall but not the Awards Gala. The public may purchase day passes for $25 or full registration for $200. Both are available at the convention center.

More than 3,000 people are expected to attend the workshop including an exhibit hall with over 200 exhibitors featuring the latest soccer equipment, technology, apparel, fundraising ideas and more. The event, the largest of its kind for youth sports in North America, features more than 90 educational workshops and demonstrations for administrators, coaches, referees, parents, and soccer enthusiasts.

The deadline to nominate a coach for the Responsible Coaching Award has been extended to Friday, December 7, 2007. Please remember to take a few minutes to write a short 150 word nomination for a worthy coach.

Liberty Mutual will be awarding 50 Responsible Coaching Awards which recognize youth soccer coaches demonstrating responsibility, integrity and excellence both on and off the field. Responsible coaches from each state will be honored for their volunteerism, dedication and responsibility to the game through the Responsible Sports program. Recreational and Competitive coaches are eligible.

Coaches, parents, administrators and volunteers are encouraged to nominate Responsible Coaches in their communities. The deadline for nominations is December 7, 2007. Each state winner will receive a $500 cash donation for their organization, as well as special recognition on ResponsibleSports.com and USYouthSoccer.org.

Chuck will issue a $10 check to those who applied for eKidSafe and are on an approved list that I will provide to him. The eKidSafe program does not result in any type of certificate of approval being issued to applicants ... instead, PTSA has password protected access to an online list of those that are approved or not ... so far, of all that have applied, no one has been "non-approved", although three background checks have not yet been performed due to failure to pay the fee online or by check.

Parks and Recreation Board

The Parks and Recreation Board is an advisory board consisting of seven members. Three of the members are recommended by the Peters Township School District. All of the members are appointed by Council and serve a three year term. The Parks and Recreation Board meets in the CRC the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM at 700 Meredith Drive, Venetia, PA 15367.

The Parks and Recreation Board recommends policies and programs designed to meet the leisure needs of all age groups. The PTHS Varsity Boys won their match yesterday 2-0 against Central Buck East in the PIAA quarterfinals. They advance to the PIAA Semi-final Tuesday evening against Pine-Richland (which defeated WPIAL Champion, Bethel Park, 2-1). Location of Tuesday's match has not yet been determined, but it should be in PA West locally ... check Monday's Post-Gazette website or newspaper).

Unfortunately, the PTHS Varisty Girls were eliminated from the PIAA playoffs after losing to Penn-Trafford 1-2 yesterday. PTHS previously won against Penn-Trafford 9-1 during the regular season.

As was discussed at the October Board Meeting, an online petition has been developed regarding our fields. The Petition was crafted by Tony Belfiore, Gary Lang and me. PTSA Coaches,

Over the course of the last few weeks, the soccer fields have deteriorated again. We believe the problem to be caused largely due to inadequate field maintenance by Peters Township, not overuse by our soccer players. Although PTSA had expected that the fields were potentially going to receive some intensive reformation over the summer, particularly the Peterswood Soccer Complex (Peterswood Park Field #5), we do not believe that occurred. During the last year we have experienced cut electrical lines to the irrigation system at Elm Grove leaving it without water for much of the summer, disruption to the water service at Venetia Park since the baseball concession building and restrooms were built there leaving it without water to the present, irrigation system turn-off at Rees Park for a period of three weeks during the September / October drought leaving our best field turf dry and root starved, inadequate top-dressing at Peterswood Soccer Complex and lack of water-wheel use there for most of the summer (when the field was closed for two months)leaving it in a continuously sparse condition, and Old Grasshopper Field lacking any water source for irrigation. Compounding the irrigation and poor soil conditions at the fields was a severe grub infestation problem that mainifested at Elm Grove and Venetia Park.

I believe the Peters Township Parks & Recreation Maintenance Department and the Peters Township Parks & Recreation Director each have good intentions regarding field maintenance. However, the poor field conditions PTSA experiences year after year speaks for itself ... the fields are substandard and poorly maintained. Despite my many efforts to draw focus to the issue, I believe that until a majority of PTSA's Members speak out and voice their disatisfaction with the fields' situation, my voice alone will continue to be but a whisper in the wind. To amplify that whisper to a volume that gets heard, a petition has been crafted by Tony Belfiore (U8 Boys Commissioner), Gary Lang (Vice President), and me. The petition is attached. I ask that you send an email to every family you touch as a PTSA Coach with a request that they log-on to the petition site ASAP and to support the petition. Our goal is to achieve 500 signatures. If that is achieved, I believe it will represent a collective level of dissatisfaction with the Peters Township fields, by a significant number of Peters Township taxpayers, that the Petition's call to action cannot be ignored by those in responsible positions within Peters Township.

The PTHS Indians soccer team won decisively against Fox Chapel last evening 3-0 ... they advance to the semi-finals in their pursuit of a WPIAL Championship. They next play the Chartiers Valley Colts on Tuesday, October 30th @ 8:00pm at the South Fayette High School stadium field: 3640 Old Oakdale Road, McDonald, PA 15057. Please spread the word and encourage all Coaches to inform their teams and attend the match.

Unfortunately, the PTHS Lady Indians lost last evening 1-2 in their quarterfinal match against Seneca Valley. Nevertheless, the Lady Indians posted a remarkable 21-1 record, one of the most enviable in the nation.

The Fields Director has put a message on Hotline # that the Fields are re-opened ... we expect they'll remain open through Sunday's matches. However, if Coaches decide to cancel games anyway (for any reason), please advise them they must contact the Referee Director, Steve Glovier well in advance so Referees aren't showing up to Fields when matches have been canceled (if they do, PTSA has obligation to pay them even when they haven't worked).

PTSA Coaches,

Over the course of the last few weeks, the soccer fields have deteriorated again. We believe the problem to be caused largely due to inadequate field maintenance by Peters Township, not overuse by our soccer players. Although PTSA had expected that the fields were potentially going to receive some intensive reformation over the summer, particularly the Peterswood Soccer Complex (Peterswood Park Field #5), we do not believe that occurred. During the last year we have experienced cut electrical lines to the irrigation system at Elm Grove leaving it without water for much of the summer, disruption to the water service at Venetia Park since the baseball concession building and restrooms were built there leaving it without water to the present, irrigation system turn-off at Rees Park for a period of three weeks during the September / October drought leaving our best field turf dry and root starved, inadequate top-dressing at Peterswood Soccer Complex and lack of water-wheel use there for most of the summer (when the field was closed for two months)leaving it in a continuously sparse condition, and Old Grasshopper Field lacking any water source for irrigation. Compounding the irrigation and poor soil conditions at the fields was a severe grub infestation problem that mainifested at Elm Grove and Venetia Park.

I believe the Peters Township Parks & Recreation Maintenance Department and the Peters Township Parks & Recreation Director each have good intentions regarding field maintenance. However, the poor field conditions PTSA experiences year after year speaks for itself ... the fields are substandard and poorly maintained. Despite my many efforts to draw focus to the issue, I believe that until a majority of PTSA's Members speak out and voice their disatisfaction with the fields' situation, my voice alone will continue to be but a whisper in the wind. To amplify that whisper to a volume that gets heard, a petition has been crafted by Tony Belfiore (U8 Boys Commissioner), Gary Lang (Vice President), and me. The petition is attached. I ask that you send an email to every family you touch as a PTSA Coach with a request that they log-on to the petition site ASAP and to support the petition. Our goal is to achieve 500 signatures. If that is achieved, I believe it will represent a collective level of dissatisfaction with the Peters Township fields, by a significant number of Peters Township taxpayers, that the Petition's call to action cannot be ignored by those in responsible positions within Peters Township.

This game will be followed by the Boys Varsity hosting North Allegheny at 8:00pm.

Attached is an event flyer you can print for all your players and also email it to your Coaches for their forwarding to players & parents. 110 PTSA 30th Year Anniversary T-shirts were distributed at the 9/26/07 match which was "lightening" canceled, so we have about 200 more T-shirts to giveaway to the Youth players ... lets publicize this event with a goal to beat the Boys Youth Night attendance at which 205 T-shirts were distributed.

Encourage your players to support the JV & Varsity teams ... some day in the future, many of the players in your PTSA in-house and travel leagues will be playing at a high level for PTHS, the premier high school program in Western PA, the 4th ranked team in Region 3, and amongst the best teams in the country as the most recent NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) rankings listed the PTHS Lady Indians 19th in the United States ... they are a special team to watch and PTSA youth players can learn a lot from how they play soccer.

Re: PCA Coaches Clinic

Through the initiative of the Park and Recreation Board the Youth exemplifying Sportsmanship Program was implemented. Through this program the Board mission is to "Provide the children of Peters Township with an opportunity to participate in positive sports programs by: coordinating and guiding Parks and Recreation Sports Associations in promoting sportsmanlike conduct in their respective organizations, providing written materials, resources and training to parents, coaches and players and monitoring the successes and needs of all participants". The Y.E.S. program is offering this Coaches Clinic to help work toward this mission.

Participants of the Coaches Clinic will receive valuable tools and information to help enhance their performance and maximize the players' experience. They will receive a certificate card upon completion of the workshop. And each association will get one background check voucher for each coach that attends from their association. We expect each association to have at least 20% of their coaching staff in attendance for the clinic. Because of the help of grants and contributions from Rotary, VFW, Washington County and the DCED, the cost of the clinic will be free to those attending. We will have refreshments and provide materials needed for the clinic; all they need to do is show up.

We ask for your involvement and support. Please get the word out. Send out a group email with the information to your participants. Pass out the flyers that we have provided at practices and games. Encourage participation; it can only benefit your organization and more importantly the children that participate.

Please send a notice to your Coaches to remind parents that loose dogs are not permitted at the soccer fields and leashed dogs are discouraged (as they tend to distract, frighten some players and other spectators) ... also, one of our coaches had to remove "dog dirt" from a playing field due to the lack of consideration exhibited to others by a dog owner who ignored Peters Township park rules or was extremely inattentive to their dogs' business. I know we've had instances of dogs appearing at the fields that are running loose from surrounding neighborhoods ... in those instances, Peters Townhip's Animal Control should be contacted as it is responsible for stray or lost dogs ... Animal Control Officer Kim Secreet can be reached at 724-746-4344. If no answer there, the Peters Township Non-Emergency Police number is 724-942-5030.

Here's the process players / parents should go through on the Youth Nights ... please communicate to Coaches:

The Peters Township Soccer Boosters Youth Night Coordinators will be at the stadium by 6:00 for Youth Night Players can arrive that early for checking in at the table (they can watch the JV games which start at 6:00), although most of the youth players won't arrive until 7:00 – 7:30. A table near the ticket booth will be set-up for the players and teams to register and get their PTSA 30 Year Anniversary T-shirts (for the first 250 players, each Youth Night) and free raffle tickets (for prizes). The Coordinators will stay at the table until half time of the Varsity game. The players and teams are to congregate on the far side of the ticket booth area twenty minutes before half-time (near the table). Then, the players will walk out on the field when their team is announced – then they can form a "victory tunnel" for the Varsity players return to the field for the second half.

Also, I've left some extra "flyers" in glassine bags at the PSC and Rees fields this morning ... please encourage all coaches to have their players participate on 9/18 (boys) and 9/26 (girls). Flyers are attached again if you want to send another email to Coaches.

Venetia Fields Closed

Venetia Fields Closed
The Venetia Fields will be closed this Friday (tomorrow) and this weekend. The games scheduled for Venetia (Nee v DeGurian, Brucker v Donina, Bubash v Hoffman) will be moved to PSC Field #4. The referees have already been contacted.

Reason
There is a severe grub problem at several of our fields, including Venetia. PTP&R Maintenance will be applying grub treatment tomorrow. Since Venetia Field's irrigation system is turned off (due to leak in system), the fields need to be closed due to toxicity of the treatment not being "wet-in".

If you are Nee, DeGurian, Brucker, Donina, Bubash or Hoffman, please contact your parents about the games and let me know you received this message.

Practices

Corner Flags

A note on corner flags: We don't use them for U8.

I noticed that someone kindly placed corner flags on at least one of the Venetia fields for the games last weekend. This was not necessary and, I believe, were the flags needed by the U10 fields at Rees Park.

This was my fault since I wasn't clear about this in my Coaches Guide. I'll make sure to add it for next year.

So, please, no need to worry about those corner flags for U8. Just make sure all of the U8 fields get painted.

I worked out Mickal at practice and believe he would be better suited helping with the rec program. Is there anyone out there that would be willing to take another player for their team?

For example, you are not getting a lot of kids to show for practices, or some kid quit. In general, you feel the commitment is not there from a handful of your parents.

U8 Game Day Information

I wanted to give all of the coaches a few reminders for our first U8 soccer game this Saturday.

1. Check for "toe-cleats"

Make sure none of your players are wearing a shoe with a toe-cleat. Baseball and football shoes typically have a cleat at the front of the shoe called a "toe-cleat". Referees have been instructed to not let this equipment on the field. In prior years we had many kids that could not play a game due to this issue. Please communicate this to all of your parents so everyone can play this weekend.

2. Respect the referees

Please keep in mind that the referees are typically kids and are part of the learning process. Avoid "making calls" for them. Please be patient and give them your respect. Always encourage them to be loud and vocal (as they are often timid). Prevent any coaching from behind the goals.

3. Team & spectator locations

Make sure your parents and families are aware of the spectator locations for each of our fields. There is a diagram for PSC and Venetia.

Both team benches must be located on the same side of the field, separated by the halfway line and opposite the spectators. Please help the referees ensure this policy is enforced. Spectators should refrain from yelling out instructions and should not be located behind the goals.

4. Painting the lines & Putting out signs

It is the responsibility of the coaches of the early games to paint the lines on the field prior to game time. Please make sure that all U8 boys fields get lined - not just "your" field for that day by coordinating with the other early coaches. Please read the coaches guide for specific information.

Also, coaches of the early game at PSC should make sure to place out both PSC field diagram signs.

5. Make-Up Games

Check the field hot line to make sure the fields are open prior to game time. If we all get rained out, then we can extend the season to the weekend of Oct 3rd.

The policy for individual make-up games (at least a 24 hour notice to the Referee Coordinator) is now available on http://www.ptsoccer.net/. Click on the Referee tab to the left for specific instructions.

Signs, Game Balls, & Med Kits

U8 Coaches:

Some additional notes that I wanted to pass onto you guys.

Signs
Like last year, the U8 Boys coaches have one additional responsibility (like you need one more thing to do, right?). The early game coaches (10am) at PSC are responsible for placing out both PSC field diagram signs. They are located in the shed and both come with a lock. Please attach each sign, with the lock, to the two PSC entrances. Please do not lock the signs to the movable gates, as the signs can be damaged if the gate is open and closed.

Game Balls & Med Kits
I'm still waiting to hear from the Equipment Director with respect to Game Balls and Medical Kits. You may need to pick these items up last minute, before your first game. Apologies for the delay. I'll let you know as soon as I hear something.

This is a good question, so I've bcc'd all of the U8 coaches on this email.

I've had an unusual number of late registrations, and all of our teams are maxed out at 9 players, so I'll be unable to take anyone else.

Please, if anyone has less than 9 players (someone quit, etc.) then please let me know so I can make room for a few more late registrations. I try to avoid 10 players on a roster due to playing time issues during games.
